Senator challenged in Sept. 16 election

The race for the local 2nd Suffolk District state Senate seat likely will be decided in the Sept. 16 Democratic primary election.

Eight-term incumbent Dianne Wilkerson is facing a challenge from Jamaica Plain activist Sonia Chang-Diaz. In 2006, Chang-Diaz also ran against Wilkerson, winning Mission Hill but losing district-wide.

Chang-Diaz and Wilkerson are both progressives with nearly identical political views. Virtually the only debated issue, both in 2006 and now, is Wilkerson's decade-long history of financial scandals. Last month, Wilkerson acknowledged that she violated campaign finance reporting laws in 2000-04 and agreed to pay a $10,000 fine. [See related article.]

Teen charged with shooting 7-year-old

A Hyde Park teenager has been charged with firing the stray bullet that wounded a 7-year-old boy during a June 30 shootout on Tremont Street.

Richard Penha, 18, pleaded innocent to multiple charges, including assault with intent to murder. He was held on $75,000 bail after his arraignment last month. He was also wounded during the shooting.

The 7-year-old victim was identified as Brandon Guerrero by Caeli Bourbeau, a family friend and Guerrero's Little League coach. Guerrero is reportedly recovering from the gunshot wound.

Rethinking Calumet Square

Resident does urban design pro bono

Steve Nutter has a problem with Calumet Square and a plan to deal with it—a plan that has generated the interest of City Councilor Mike Ross and the Community Alliance for Mission Hill (CAMH).

The Square, at the intersection of Calumet and St. Alphonsus streets, is too big, he said. "It's a giant piece of asphalt in the middle of the neighborhood."

Currently, a rounded edge on the southwest side of the intersection, where Calumet Street turns left create a large asphalt triangle. That encourages speeding and makes for a tricky pedestrian crossing, Nutter said.
